CIOs need to create and work with an external ecosystem of analysts, venture capitalists, investors, and vendors who can provide them insights into emerging technologies and how could business models be disrupted by these technologies.
They should be good explorers and an innovator and move out of IT in order to work with the business leaders across the company, work with the board as well as the executive committee.
The focus here needs to shift from IT operations to what the entire organization is trying to achieve. They need to be keen to the information they’re hearing that too without being dazzled by the technology.
In other words, the most successful CIOs don’t just rely on technology to enable the business to perform a task. In fact, they look forward to a business outcome which can now be enabled by technology.
